Notre Dame held another practice this morning, and we got access to the first five periods. There’s not really much to gather from this one, even less than the last practice, but here’s what I saw.

A few personnel notes. Quarterback Steve Angeli and linebacker Junior Tuihalamaka were not at practice today. Both were out with an illness. Wide receiver Jayden Thomas was at practice and going through drills, but he was doing so very slowly. Wide receiver Deion Colzie was wearing a red jersey at practice as he recovers from the surgery on his hand.

They started the practice with a quick team tempo period of offense vs defense. They went four plays with the first group, four plays with the second group.

TEAM PERIOD

*** The first team offense in the opening period was QB Kenny Minchey, RB Jeremiyah Love, WR KK Smith (Z), WR Jaden Greathouse (slot), WR Micah Gilbert (X), TE Cooper Flanagan, LT Charles Jagusah, LG Pat Coogan, C Ashton Craig, RG Billy Schrauth, RT Tosh Baker. The first team defense was DE RJ Oben, DT Jason Onye, NT Donovan Hinish, DE Jordan Botelho, LB Jaylen Sneed (Drayk Bowen came in as well), LB Jack Kiser, NB Jordan Clark, FS Xavier Watts, BS Adon Shuler, FC Jaden Mickey, BC Clarence Lewis.

*** Notre Dame gained good yards on a quick inside run to Love to start the team period. The OL got a very good inside push to get Love downhill for quality yards. Minchey hit Flanagan on a quick slide route on the second play for another quality gain to get the ball out past midfield. The third play was another inside run, but Kiser and Botelho blew it up. The first drive ended with Minchey throwing a dart over the middle to Gilbert, but the pass was broken up on a good play by Lewis.

*** The second offense was QB CJ Carr, RB Aneyas Williams, WR Cam Williams (Z), WR Jayden Harrison (slot), WR Jack Polian (boundary), TE Davis Sherwood, LT Sullivan Absher, LG Ty Chan, C Sam Pendleton, RG Rocco Spindler, RT Aamil Wagner. The second defense was DE Boubacar Traore, DT Cole Mullins, NT Sean Sevillano, DE Josh Burnham, LB Jaiden Ausberry, LB Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa, NB Micah Bell, FS Ben Minich, BS Luke Talich, FC Christian Gray, BC Chance Tucker.

*** Traore badly beat Wagner on the first play, which blew up a run. Carr threw a quick hitch for a short completion to Williams on the second play. Carr did a good job seeing the blitz and getting it out quickly. It’s good he did because Ausberry flew into the backfield, and if Carr holds the ball at all he would have been sacked (in theory, they can’t hit quarterbacks). The offense ran a play-action pass that got a wide receiver from the left side to come behind the line on a screen to the right side. Bell absolutely blew the play up. He read it well, but his ability to fly to the football was really impressive. We always knew he was incredibly fast, but he looked instinctive and certain of what he was doing on that play as well, which is a great sign. Carr got a stop throw to Williams out on the final play, but it was broken up on a very nice play by Gray.

There was a lot of special teams the remainder of the practice, at least for the defense. The offensive line went outside to work on sleds and the receivers went through route drills. Kris Mitchell was there doing drills, even though he wasn’t out with either the first or second team during the team period.
