Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman is certainly a well known commodity, so it's no surprise he continues to be on preseason watch lists. The latest is the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award, which had Hartman as one of its 35 watch list players.

Hartman was the crown jewel of Notre Dame's offseason additions, coming to South Bend after spending his first five college seasons at Wake Forest.

The North Carolina native ranks 19th in NCAA history with 12,967 passing yards and 18th all-time with 110 passing touchdowns. Hartman finished his Wake Forest career ranked 1st all-time in passing touchdowns and 2nd in passing yards, trailing only Philip Rivers. He also ranked 3rd all-time in the league in passing completions and passing attempts.

Hartman is the only ACC player to have two single season touchdown numbers to rank in the Top 5 in conference history. His 39 touchdowns in 2021 ranks 4th all-time and his 38 touchdowns in 2022 ranks 5th all-time.

Notre Dame is hoping that Hartman can give the offense something it lacked in 2022, and that is a potent pass attack. If he can carry over his Wake Forest success to Notre Dame he'll give the Irish their best pass attack since 2009 when Jimmy Clausen set the program's all-time passer efficiency record.

The Davey O'Brien Award goes annually to the nation's best quarterback, as chosen by Davey O'Brien Foundation. It was first handed out in 1977 and was called the Davey O'Brien Memorial Trophy, but at the time it went to the best player in the Southwest. Texas running back Earl Campbell was the first player to win the award.

By 1981, the name was changed to its present form and was made to be a quarterback award. O'Brien was the starting quarterback for TCU back in 1937-38, winning the Heisman Trophy and Maxwell Award in 1938.
