Quarterback Tyler Buchner Enters The Transfer Portal

Notre Dame rising junior quarterback Tyler Buchner has entered the transfer portal

Notre Dame rising junior quarterback Tyler Buchner announced that he intends to enter the transfer portal. Buchner did note in his release that returning to Notre Dame is still an option.

"I love Notre Dame," Buchner said in a Twitter release. "The people, and especially my teammates, are what makes this place special to me. I have decided to enter the transfer portal in order to explore my options, and decide what is best for my future.

"After discussions with Coach Freeman, remaining at Notre Dame is thankfully an option I'm continuing to consider."

Losing Buchner would be a tough blow for Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame. Transfer Sam Hartman is expected to be the starter, but Buchner was likely going to maintain a role in the offense and was on pace to be the team's starter in 2024 and 2025 after Hartman exhausts his eligibility.

Hartman and Buchner battled during the spring but it was clear that Hartman would likely be the starter. The veteran was outstanding in the Blue-Gold Game while Buchner struggled. Although Buchner says staying at Notre Dame will remain an option, most players that enter the portal don't return, although that would be ideal for Notre Dame.

Buchner has 949 career passing yards, 459 career rushing yards and 13 career touchdowns. He started three games last season, including Notre Dame's 45-38 Gator Bowl victory over South Carolina. Buchner was named the MVP of that game after passing for 273 yards, rushing for 61 yards and accounting for five touchdowns.

Should Buchner depart it would leave sophomore Steve Angeli and true freshman Kenny Minchey battling it out for the backup quarterback role. Neither player has thrown a pass in their college careers.
