Notre Dame Ranked 10th In Phil Steele Preseason Magazine

Phil Steele had Notre Dame in the No. 10 spot in his 2023 college football preseason rankings

Phil Steele's 2023 College Football Preview magazine is out and he has the Notre Dame Fighting Irish ranked 10th in his preseason Top 40 rankings. 

Three Notre Dame opponents were ranked ahead of the Irish in Steele's preseason ranking. Clemson is Notre Dame's highest ranked opponent, coming in 2nd in Steele's ranking. This is the highest ranking I've seen for the Tigers heading into the season. Ohio State ranked 5th in his ranking and the USC Trojans checked in 7th in his ranking.

Steele only ranked 60 teams in this list, which he calls a preseason Top 40. I know, I know, it's one of the many quirks of the rankings. But four more Notre Dame opponents were in this ranking, with Pitt ranking 23rd, NC State ranking 37th, Duke ranking 51st and Louisville ranking 53rd.

This ranking is based on Steele's projection based on, as he states "the totality of the circumstances that I feel each team will face in the 2023 season, such as: schedule strength, foes' schedules (coming off byes), experience edges at the start of the year and so forth." It's about where he expects team to finish the 2023 season.

Steele actually does two rankings in his preseason magazine. One is based on his power rankings, which is basically his ranking of teams independent of any other criteria. It's just how good he thinks a team is, and in that ranking he has Notre Dame ranked 12th.
