The arrival of quarterback Sam Hartman has certainly raised expectations for Notre Dame heading into the 2023 season. The position has been a problem at times for Notre Dame over the last decade, and Hartman arrives as one of the most prolific passers in NCAA history.

ESPN released a ranking of the 50 best newcomers in college football for the 2023 season, a list that includes transfers and true freshmen. Hartman was ranked as the No. 2 newcomer in all of college football by the outlet, which has had some interesting takes for Notre Dame this offseason.

"Hartman was one of the top quarterback transfers this offseason and is coming to Notre Dame at the perfect time. Drew Pyne and Tyler Buchner both transferred and the Irish were searching for stability at the position. Hartman was a five-year starter at Wake Forest and earned third-team All-ACC honors in 2022. He threw for 12,967 yards and 110 touchdowns with 41 interceptions in his Deacons career and is now tasked with leading the Irish in 2023." - Tom VanHaaren, ESPN

Hartman enters the 2023 season as one of the most prolific passers in college football history after five seasons at Wake Forest. He currently ranks 18th all-time in passing yards (12,967) and 19th all-time in passing touchdowns (110). He ranks second in yards and first in touchdown passes on the all-time ACC lists.

Last season, Notre Dame's quarterbacks combined for 2,692 passing yards and 25 passing touchdowns in 13 games. Hartman passed for 3,701 yards and 38 passing touchdowns in 12 games.

Notre Dame will face eight other players that were on the Top 50 newcomers list. USC had four players on the list. They were linebacker Mason Smith (transfer from Oklahoma State), wide receiver Dorian Singer (transfer from Arizona), defensive tackle Bear Alexander (transfer from Georgia) and freshman wide receiver Zachariah Branch.

Ohio State wide receiver Carnell Tate (high school), NC State quarterback Brennan Armstrong (transfer from Virginia) and Clemson defensive tackle Peter Woods (high school) also made the list.
