The Notre Dame secondary was a major question mark heading into the 2022 season, but things have changed dramatically in the last year, and now the secondary is considered one of the nation's best. Lindy's Sports ranks the Notre Dame defensive backs as the sixth best returning DB unit in college football for the 2023 season.

"Wouldn't be shocked if second-year cornerback Benjamin Morrison ends up being a two-time All-American before heading off to the NFL. If fellow corner Cam Hart can avoid the injury bug that has plagued his career, the Irish have a top duo on the outside while exploring intriguing but more unproven pieces at safety." - Lindy's Sports

Morrison was a second team preseason All-American with Lindy's, so it's not a surprise to hear them praise him the way they did. It's deserved praise for the rising sophomore, who earned Freshman All-American honors last season when he intercepted six passes. If Morrison only has slight improvement as a sophomore he's a clear All-American candidate.

Hart was Notre Dame's best corner at times last season, and he was playing his best football of the season when he went down with a season-ending shoulder injury. Health is without question the biggest question mark for Hart in 2023, and Lindy's is clearly high on his potential on the outside.

Safety is rightly pointed out as the bigger question mark, but I was pleased to see Lindy's speak about it with a favorable outlook. This is a group that is unproven in many ways, but with players like Xavier Watts and Ramon Henderson returning, there is athleticism and potential at safety. Watts began to show his impact ability late in the 2022 season, and Henderson's flashes have been outstanding.

The question will be can that duo put it all together consistently in 2023. If they can this secondary has a chance to be one of the very best in the country. The Lindy's preseason magazine also came out before Notre Dame landed Rhode Island transfer Antonio Carter II, which was a huge addition for the Irish. If Carter can make a quick transition to the Power 5 level he could not only provide excellent depth at safety, he could challenge the starters for playing time.
