Notre Dame senior wide receiver Deion Colzie had another injury setback and will miss at least the next week with a hand injury. Head coach Marcus Freeman announced the injury at today's post-practice press conference. This was the fourth practice of the spring for the Irish.

Colzie missed all but three games of the 2023 season with an injury, and staying healthy has been a battle for him throughout his career. According to Freeman, Colzie's injury will keep him out at least a week, but the good news for the Georgia native is that he should return and be able to practice during the spring.

The 6-5, 212-pound senior is one of the more talented receivers on the roster, but he has yet to turn that into consistent production. He enters the 2024 season with 16 career catches for 304 yards (19.0 YPC) and two touchdowns.

Notre Dame lacked size at wide receiver in 2023, among other problems. The expectation was that adding Colzie and Clemson transfer Beaux Collins would fill that void. Colzie and Collins are both tall and talented players, but both have had issues staying healthy.

For Colzie, the hope is that he'll be able to quickly return from the injury and get back on track. This is a big spring for him thanks to the arrival of so many talented younger players and the presence of veteran Jayden Thomas. Collins will start practicing this summer, which adds to the competition. Colzie needed a strong spring in order to establish himself as a player in the boundary battle.

A breakout from Colzie would have give the Irish the kind of long, vertical oriented boundary weapon it needs, so with him suffering another injury it raises concerns about whether or not he'll be able to become the player the Irish staff hoped he would be when he signed as part of the 2021 class.
