Notre Dame, Purdue To Renew Women's Basketball Rivalry
Notre Dame and Purdue are set to renew their women’s basketball rivalry. The two programs announced on Tuesday morning that they will resume what was once a hotly contested annual series this season.
The Fighting Irish will host the Boilermakers on Dec. 17 this season. The two programs have met 27 times previously but they haven’t played since meeting in the second round of the 2017 NCAA Tournament. The last time the Irish and Boilermakers played during the regular season was 2012.
Notre Dame is 13-14 all-time against Purdue, but the Irish have won the last eight matchups. The most significant meeting between the two rivals came in the 2001 national championship game when current Irish head coach Niele Ivey was the point guard. Notre Dame prevailed 68-66 to win the program’s first national championship.
Purdue is led by alum Katie Gearalds who played at Purdue from 2003-2008. Three current Purdue players are South Bend area alums. All three attended South Bend Washington High School. Rashunda Jones, Amiyah Reynolds and Mila Reynolds.
Amiyah Reynolds was the No. 43 overall recruit in the 2023 ESPN HoopGurlz Recruiting Rankings, while Jones was 79th. The Reynolds are the first sister pair in Purdue women’s basketball history after Mila transferred to West Lafayette from Maryland this offseason.
