It's that time of the year when the postseason award watch lists come out, and Notre Dame quarterback Sam Hartman will likely be a frequent name on those lists. Today the Maxwell Award released its watch list for the 2023 season, and Hartman was one of 84 players to earn a spot.

The Maxwell Award goes annually to the best college football player in the country, and it was first handed out in 1937. Hartman certainly has the career production to find himself on a list like this, and now being at Notre Dame he is part of a program that also has the prestige to make him a contender for the award.

The former Wake Forest quarterback ended his Demon Deacon career with 12,967 passing yards and 110 passing touchdowns. His 110 touchdown passes is the most ever by a ACC quarterback and his passing yards ranks second all-time, trailing only former NC State and Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Philip Rivers

At Notre Dame, Hartman will get a chance to play in more big time games, which means more spotlight opportunities. If he can put up big numbers, lead the Irish to a lot of wins and perform well in big matchups against Ohio State, Clemson and USC - who has last year's Maxwell winner Caleb Williams at quarterback - he could present Notre Dame with its best chance to have a Maxwell winner since Manti Te'o won it back in 2012.

Notre Dame has had six players win a total of seven Maxwell Awards. Leon Hart won the honor in 1949, Johnny Lattner won it back-to-back years (1952, 1953), Jim Lynch won it in 1966, Ross Browner won it in 1977, Brady Quinn won it in 2006, and of course Te'o won it in 2012.
