Class Impact: Breaking Down The Commitment Of Styles Prescod To Notre Dame

Breaking down what the commitment of Styles Prescod means for the Notre Dame 2024 recruiting class and the Irish depth chart

Notre Dame picked up a commitment from Hamilton (Ind.) Southeastern offensive tackle Styles Prescod. The 6-6, 270-pound blocker is an important pickup for the Fighting Irish.

Let's break down what this commitment means for the Notre Dame 2024 class and the Fighting Irish depth chart.

NOTRE DAME CLASS IMPACT

Prescod is the 19th player to commit to Notre Dame in the 2024 class, and he's the 10th member of the Irish offensive class. The talented blocker is also the third member of the offensive line haul.

Notre Dame has 13 players on the current roster that it signed in the last three classes, and all but one player among that group didn't redshirt as a true freshman (Joe Alt). That means 12 of the 13 players have at least two seasons of eligibility remaining AFTER the 2023 season. That means Notre Dame didn't have a big numbers need in the class. Landing Prescod means Notre Dame has met its minimum needs number.

The bigger question and need wasn't about overall numbers, it was about landing players that can thrive at offensive tackle. Notre Dame has a lot more number for the interior positions than tackle, and that's where Prescod's commitment has the biggest impact. Although some project him as an interior player, I view Prescod as a player that can be a natural tackle. Like most tackles he could play inside if the need or opportunity arose, but he's a natural fit at tackle, and that's huge for Notre Dame.

NOTRE DAME FIT - ANALYSIS

Whether or not he projects best at left or right tackle will be determined by his technical development and the depth chart need when he's ready to compete for a job. There is no question in my mind, however, that Prescod projects as a natural tackle in the Notre Dame offense due to his potential in the pass game and ability as a drive blocker in the run game.

Prescod is listed at 6-6 and 270 pounds. I'm not sure if he's all of 6-6, but I like the length and frame he brings to the game. There is plenty of room for him to add muscle and really good weight, and I see him being an easy 300+ pound edge player. The length he possesses for the edge is also easy to see.

Right now his game is at its best when he can be physical and play with power. Although he'll need a lot of technical work and weight room work, Prescod shows an impressive natural punch and the ability to drive defenders off the ball. As he becomes stronger and learns to play with better pad level, use his hands better and works his feet through contact he should develop into a powerful edge blocker in the run game.

Prescod tends to be a waste bender, but that's a technical issue much more so than an athletic problem. Prescod is a quality athlete that moves very well in space when his technique is right. He gets into his pass sets with ease, he shows range on the edge and he has the length/punch needed to thrive in space.
