Elite Quarterback Deuce Knight Recaps “Special” Return To Notre Dame
One of the most important recruits on the board for Notre Dame in the 2025 class is Lucedale (Miss.) George County star quarterback Deuce Knight. The talented signal caller wrapped up a huge visit with the Irish, who made another strong impression.
Knight got a chance to continue bonding with the Irish coaches, and even take in a Notre Dame practice.
"It was a great visit overall,” Knight told Irish Breakdown. "Getting back to campus, with my mom this time, was special. Getting the chance to talk with Coach (Marcus) Freeman and Coach (Gino) Guidugli in person again is crazy. They are such cool people and really make me feel like I’m a part of the family.”
One cool new element that the staff set up for Knight’s visit was the photo shoot. The golden throne wasn’t pulled out. Neither were the golden backdrops. No, the staff pulled out all the stops for the talented signal caller.
"The photo shoot was pretty crazy too,” Knight explained. "They got to take me up to the top of the safety and I got to hold the Heisman Trophy. I didn’t know what was going on and Chad (Bowden) told me to head up there after I got the Blue and Gold on.”
With seven Heisman Trophy winners in Notre Dame’s storied history, the magnitude of holding that trophy was not lost on Knight. According to the Mississippi native, holding it wasn’t easy.
"It was pretty heavy,” he joked. "It was just a surreal moment.”
Being able to see the practice was an important moment for Knight as well. He got to see the coaches and players in a full practice environment. That, of course, was mixed in with all the other elements of these types of visits.
"I got to watch a good bit of practice,” he explained. "I was leaving at night so I was really trying to fit everything in. They had me on a tour, got to check out most of the campus and be able to get in to see the practice.
"Coach Guidugli is a great coach,” Knight added. "He is really, really chill and energetic. You can tell the guys really love playing for him. In the meeting room, all the players are so open to asking questions. He makes his quarterbacks feel prepared at all times.”
Getting to see Guidugli’s star pupil, graduate transfer Sam Hartman, in action was another huge bonus. The two talented quarterbacks even had some chance to have some 1-on-1 time to share experiences.
"Sam and I had a quick conversation,” said Knight. "I had the chance to get his insight into the coaches and what it’s like playing for them. He talked to me about his process and why Notre Dame was the best fit for him. He wanted to be developed, play under center and win big games. There weren’t enough good things to say about the coaches. They challenge their players to be the best version of themselves.”
Knight wasn’t the only important member of the family in attendance. His mother made the trip to South Bend for the first time, which was another enjoyable experience overall.
"My mom liked it a lot,” he stated. "It was one of her favorite places that we have visited. She really liked Coach Freeman. He made a big impression on her.”
Originally Knight was slated to make a college decision this summer. That timeline has gotten pushed back a bit. Knight plans on taking several game visits this season and making his decision from there. Notre Dame is guaranteed to be one of the stops, with the Irish program trending in a very good direction.
"Notre Dame is going to be in it until the very end,” Knight said. "The plan now is to commit sometime this fall. I really want to go see some of the teams in person during games. I’m trying to get out to the Notre Dame-USC game hopefully.”
There is little question who the top signal caller is on the board for Notre Dame. After two outstanding visits already, Knight is clearly very high on the Irish program. This recruitment may last a bit longer than originally anticipated but the Mississippi standout looks more than worth the wait.
Knight passed for 1,929 yards and rushed for 488 yards as a sophomore while accounting for 23 touchdowns. He averaged 8.4 yards per carry last season, and while he has impressive running skills, Knight's greatest potential is as a passer. He's a smart young quarterback with a big arm, and as he gains more experience his ability to rip defenses up from the pocket will explode.
The George County star is ranked as the nation's No. 28 overall player and the No. 4 quarterback according to On3. He's ranked as the No. 1 dual threat quarterback in the country according to Rivals.
