There was a time when 2023 Topeka (Kan.) Hayden offensive lineman Joe Otting was an under recruited player who was overlooked recruit. That changed when Notre Dame line coach Harry Hiestand got involved, and now the Kansas native is ready to enroll with the Fighting Irish.

It has been a wild ride for Otting, who just wrapped up his final season of track and field. Mixed in with his track preparation, Otting has also been prepping for his transition to the next level. It’s been a busy few months to say the least.

"My preparation has been going well,” Otting told Irish Breakdown. "I have been working out with my trainer here in Topeka and have been getting a lot stronger and more explosive overall. Everything overall has been going good really. I have just been busy with track season.”

Otting comes from a tremendous family who have been incredibly supportive along the way. With their support, he is readying himself to make this next move. While it might be hard, Otting is ready for the next challenge and already has goals he is aiming for.

"Making the move and transition may be a little hard at the start just because of the distance from my family,” Otting explained. "Once I get settled in and get going with things It’ll loosen up. I’m just excited overall.

"The thing I want to prove is that I'm going to be the hardest worker and also be very determined to get better each and every single day,” Otting added. "There’s going to be ups and downs no doubt but being able to overcome adversity is something to show for.”

The 6-4, 270-pound offensive lineman chose Notre Dame over a series of impressive offers. Some of the notable programs who extended offers included the Fighting Irish, Nebraska, Iowa, Kansas State, Baylor, Minnesota, Missouri and Iowa State among others.

Otting is also a standout track and field athlete for the Hayden Wildcats. He qualified for states in both the discus and javelin, recording personal bests of 148 '3" and 173'6” respectively. Otting also has a personal best of 45’8” in the shot put as well.
