Anthony Rezac Brings Dual Threat Skills That Notre Dame Is Searching More For

Breaking the film down of Notre Dame walk-on quarterback Anthony Rezac

Notre Dame received really interesting news this week when 2024 Omaha (Neb.) Westside quarterback Anthony Rezac committed to the Irish as a preferred walk-on. The twin brother of Notre Dame linebacker commit Teddy Rezac, he brings a very intriguing skill set to the quarterback position that is eyeing for more dual threat ability.

When you pop on the film, it’s puzzling why more schools were courting Rezac. He brings a ton of developmental upside to the table long term.

THROWING TOOLS

Athletically, Rezac is a Power Five caliber talent. His springiness, smoothness and athleticism is evident all over film. That includes making a lot of impressive throws on the run.

Here Rezac is rolling to his left, which is a difficult throw for a right handed quarterback. Even while throwing against his body, you can see that Rezac is a pretty natural throwing. His arm strength is nothing special but it is more than functional enough to make a tough throw across his body.

Some of Rezac’s best reps are making those plays off script and on the run. Here he steps up in the pocket and works to the right. You can once again see that Rezac is a very natural thrower of the football.

There is a very flexible upper half that can easily generate velocity on the run. Rezac showcased some legitimate arm talent, both from a pace and flexibility perspective. He makes some big plays as an extender.

Once again, Rezac works off of his spot and scrambles up and to the left. He loads up and pushes the ball down the field, which again isn’t easy to do rolling to the left.

Rezac finds the deep route for a touchdown. He hits the wide receiver on the run and doesn’t have to stop his momentum. Once again, you see the natural throwing ability from Rezac. There is some clear upside to work with.

There are moments where you can see Rezac throw with more pace. He has some good overall torque in his lower half, and a flexible arm to generate good velocity when aligned. You can see that from Rezac here.

On a clean drop, Rezac is able to uncork a seed to the post. You can see a little bit of a windup but he is able to make the throw while putting some heat on it. Seeing that type of throw is big for the evaluation. Is Rezac a quarterback for Notre Dame? Yes, the answer is yes.

From a technical perspective, Rezac does bring a pretty advanced understanding for how to play the position. He never looks unsettled or rushed, always in control.

Here on the pump and go, you can see those clear mechanics and a compact delivery. The good quarterbacks always make the easy things easy. After the pump fake, he had a wide open wide receiver, which he hit in stride for a big gain.

LEGITIMATE ATHLETE

As an athlete, Rezac is an absolute headache for an opposing defense. While he is a thrower first, he has great moments as a scrambler. Those moments are all over his film.

After Rezac navigates the first, he eventually turns into a runner. He takes off, and creates a big play. That ability can be a back breaker for a defense, which it appears Notre Dame wants more and more of in their offense.

Westside also utilizes Rezac in the quarterback run game quite a bit, tapping into his athleticism and running ability. At around 6-3, he is a long strider and can really chew up grass in a hurry. Once he gets north and south, it is a long day for both second and third level defenders.

This offseason Rezac had recorded a verified time of 4.48 seconds in the forty yard dash. You can see that straight line speed clearly on display. From a style perspective, there are some comparisons to former Oregon Ducks star signal caller Marcus Mariota.

FINAL THOUGHTS

Quite simply, there isn’t much understandable reasoning for why Rezac is so underrated. Perhaps it’s based upon where he plays in Nebraska, which did cause his brother Teddy to go under the radar for a long time. Regardless, it’s great news for Notre Dame.

The Irish continue to bring in tremendous dual threat talent in the quarterback room. As a preferred walk-on, Rezac is an outstanding overall pickup with upside to work with.
