Cam Williams Talks Notre Dame Coaching Changes And Quarterback Play
It was an exciting day for Notre Dame football on Friday. The news broke that former LSU offensive coordinator Mike Denbrock is expected to return to South Bend to take over the offensive play calling. That move comes after Denbrock just orchestrated the No. 1 scoring offense in the country at 46.4 points per game.
That move has the Notre Dame fans and supporters buzzing, setting even higher expectations for just how good the Irish offense can be in 2024. It is also a move that has elite 2024 wide receiver signee Cam Williams excited for. During an interview on the Irish Breakdown Podcast, Williams shared his optimism.
"When I educated myself on him, to see who he is and everything, I was like, okay we're obviously getting someone who's very worthy and fit for the job,” Williams told Irish Breakdown. "I think everyone should be excited about that. I was kind of just looking thought twitter and you can tell the fan base are excited as well.”
This isn’t the only coaching change that Williams had to endure during his recruitment. He also has a brand new wide receiver coach in Mike Brown, who actually coached with Denbrock while they were both at Cincinnati. Williams already had a previous relationship with Brown, but he also got to see him in action this past weekend. He was impressed overall by his attention to detail and enthusiasm.
"Even being there on Sunday, being like the meetings and the room and like in practice, it's someone who is very involved,” Williams explained. "He really wants these dudes to be successful.
"It was nice seeing how we, like we've known KK (Smith) has kind of been out the whole year,” he continued. "Even with him being brand new, he's trying to build these relationships with these dudes. He's trying to help them. He knows that KK may just now be still building up, but he's working hard with him. He's pushing him. So he's going to push the room no matter where you're at, on what level. It was funny, he even warms up with them too. I'm like, why is he out there running right now?”
The five-star pass catcher also got his eyes on CJ Carr and the rest of the quarterback room in action. Once you add in Riley Leonard and this is arguably the most talented quarterback room that the Irish have had in some time. Williams is very confident in the players who will be under center over the next few years.
"(I’m very excited) and I think now we've hit a point where we don't have to worry about that position,” he explained. "I know it's always like a worry for the past two years or so I've been involved. Like who's going to be it this year? Who’s going to be it next year?
“Now we have a foundation finally where I’m confident we have the dudes each year who are all going to compete to do what they need to do,” Williams added. “It's important to not have to go looking all the time so I'm happy with stability and I'm happy that stability is filled with incredible talent.”
The future of the Notre Dame offense has taken a massive makeover the last few weeks. It appears that the players definitely approve, and are pumped for the next chapter.
