Notre Dame has picked up a commitment from Salinas (Calif.) Palma wide receiver Logan Saldate. Notre Dame flipped Saldate from Oregon State, and also beat out Washington and Arizona to land the 5-11, 185-pound athlete.

Let's take a look at how the commitment of Saldate impacts the Notre Dame 2024 recruiting class and the Irish depth chart.

NOTRE DAME CLASS IMPACT

Saldate is the 21st player to commit to Notre Dame in the 2024 class, he's the 10th offensive commit in the class and he's the third wide receiver to join the class. Saldate joins fellow wideouts Cam Williams and Micah Gilbert in the Notre Dame 2024 class.

Notre Dame landed four receiver in the 2023 class, which was one of the nation's best pass catcher hauls. Despite that group picking the Irish, past failures on the trail and losses from the roster meant Notre Dame still needed three wideouts in the 2024 class, and Saldate gives Notre Dame that much-needed third receiver.

There is more to it than numbers. Notre Dame wanted the third receiver to be a complementary player to the other commits, who are taller and more vertically oriented players. The Irish also need more slot type of receivers, and after the catch types on the roster. Saldate fills those needs and brings that ideal complementary skillset to the class.

NOTRE DAME FIT - FILM ANALYSIS

Notre Dame views Saldate as a player that can thrive in the slot, but he isn't a slot only player. That versatility is important, but he was a key target for the Irish because of his ability to handle all the slot duties that Notre Dame wants in this offense. Saldate can do damage after the catch but also has the ability to stretch the field.

The first thing that stands out about Saldate on film is his speed. He runs a 10.8 in the 100-meter dash but he plays very fast. His speed can be a bit deceiving because he's so smooth, but he covers a lot of ground in a hurry, and he gets to top speed very quickly. Saldate uses his speed to make plays in different ways. He can outrun defenders to the perimeter, and if he gets a step with the ball he can go. Saldate also shows the ability to get over top of defenses.

You ideally want a slot player that can make plays after the catch, and Saldate certainly brings that to the table. Saldate shows the ability to make quick cuts with the ball in his hands. That foot quickness and change of direction should also allow him to develop into a dynamic route runner. He already shows a good feel for getting open, but with work that will become a major strength of his game.

One of the more surprising aspects of his game is how well he catches the football. He has clean hands, attacks the ball away from his body and he has fast hands going after the ball. Saldate also has very good body control and can quickly turn his body to make back shoulder grabs. But that isn't what surprised me, that would be his ability to make contested catches and out-play defenders for the football. He plays bigger than 5-11 and 185 pounds when the ball is in the air due to having an impressive catch radius for his size.
