Notre Dame Commit CJ May Takes On New Role During Return Visit

Star 2025 defensive end commit CJ May recaps return visit to Notre Dame

During the Ohio State game, 2024 Highland Home (Ala.) High School defensive end CJ May made the decision to opt for the Irish, announcing shortly after the game. On Saturday, May returned to Notre Dame for the USC game.

This return trip was very unique for the Alabama star. He, of course, got the chance to experience a great game. Seeing an Irish victory was a great, and energetic environment.

“The game was crazy,” May told Irish Breakdown. “The place was rocking 30 minutes before kickoff, and still rocking 30 minutes after. It was more chaotic than trying to leave the Ohio State game.”

The other big part of the visit is to help recruit a stellar 2025 recruiting class, which May talked a lot about. That is a big part of his role in the class.

“We are hoping (we made an impact with other recruits) for sure,” he said. “That’s the biggest upside of the early commitment, trying to help recruit.”

With that new role, the feel for May on this visit was definitely different. He was much more interested in networking and talking to the other recruits. He put in the leg work to help build a tremendous class.

“It definitely felt different this time,” May explained. “I felt like part of the recruiting staff this time around. Last time I was more so in the moment, and letting my commitment sink in.

“This time it was more working the room, and talking to guys and their parents,” he continued. “We are trying our best to put together a great recruiting class.”

The 6-4, 225-pound pass rusher chose Notre Dame over a long list of impressive offers. Some of the premier programs who have offered include Georgia, Clemson, Miami, Penn State, Tennessee, Auburn, Ole Miss, Arkansas, South Carolina, Duke, Louisville, Georgia Tech and Vanderbilt among others.

May is considered a four-star recruit both on the 247Sports and On3 Industry rankings. The former has him the highest, currently pegging the Alabama native as the No. 171 overall player and No. 18 edge defender in the 2025 recruiting class.

As a sophomore, May put together a quality season for Highland Home. He registered 50 total tackles, 10 tackles for loss and 2.5 sacks.

Through four games as a junior, May has collected 16 total tackles, two tackles for loss and two sacks. He has also broken up three passes so far.
