FILM ANALYSIS

Viliamu-Asa already has the kind of size and frame you want in a pure inside linebacker. He is at least 6-2 and 230 pounds, but he has good weight and although his frame is sturdy, it's not so big that you worry about him quickly out-growing the position like we saw with Junior Tuihalamaka and Josh Burnham.

What I love about his game is that although he's built like a thumper, Viliamu-Asa is a smooth all-around linebacker. He is productive against the run, he's impactful in coverage and he's a strong blitzer.

Viliamu-Asa is a smooth and fluid athlete that has the desired short-area burst and quickness you want in an impact run defender. He is patient when he needs to be, but when he commits to attacking the St. John Bosco star gets where he needs to in a hurry. He takes good angles to the football, shows good sideline range and his tackling technique is good. His block destruction is good from a finishing standpoint, but I would like to see him be a bit more forceful initially when taking on linemen.

In the pass game, Viliamu-Asa uses his quickness to get into zones, where he does most of his damage. I don't see him as a guy that will play a ton of man coverage, but he is long enough and rangy enough to run with tight ends and backs. Where he shines is making quick reads and jumping routes. His ability to read the eyes of quarterbacks and routes is impressive. As a blitzer he shows the timing, burst, ability to get through tight holes and finishing to be impactful in this area as well.

NOTRE DAME FIT

Notre Dame doesn't view Viliamu-Asa as a pure Mike or Will, they like his ability to play both inside spots, but there's no doubt he is viewed as an inside linebacker in the Irish defense. He has the combination of instincts, physicality, range and tackling ability to be an impact player in the middle of the Irish defense.
