FILM ANALYSIS
The first thing that stands out about Saldate on film is his speed. He runs a 10.8 in the 100-meter dash but he plays very fast. His speed can be a bit deceiving because he's so smooth, but he covers a lot of ground in a hurry, and he gets to top speed very quickly. Saldate uses his speed to make plays in different ways. He can outrun defenders to the perimeter, and if he gets a step with the ball he can go. Saldate also shows the ability to get over top of defenses.
You ideally want a slot player that can make plays after the catch, and Saldate certainly brings that to the table. Saldate shows the ability to make quick cuts with the ball in his hands. That foot quickness and change of direction should also allow him to develop into a dynamic route runner. He already shows a good feel for getting open, but with work that will become a major strength of his game.
One of the more surprising aspects of his game is how well he catches the football. He has clean hands, attacks the ball away from his body and he has fast hands going after the ball. Saldate also has very good body control and can quickly turn his body to make back shoulder grabs. But that isn't what surprised me, that would be his ability to make contested catches and out-play defenders for the football. He plays bigger than 5-11 and 185 pounds when the ball is in the air due to having an impressive catch radius for his size.
NOTRE DAME FIT
Notre Dame views Saldate as a player that can thrive in the slot, but he isn't a slot only player. That versatility is important, but he was a key target for the Irish because of his ability to handle all the slot duties that Notre Dame wants in this offense. Saldate can do damage after the catch but also has the ability to stretch the field.
