Notre Dame Commit Teddy Rezac Brings A "Competitive Spirit" To The Defense

Westside head coach Paul Limongi gives insight on new Notre Dame Fighting Irish commit Teddy Rezac

Notre Dame remained red hot on the recruiting trail this week, landing Omaha (Neb.) Westside linebacker Teddy Rezac. The talented defender became the 15th member of the 2024 Irish class, including the first linebacker commitment in the group.

In the world of recruiting, star rankings and offer lists can only tell you so much. To get a little more insight on Rezac, his high school coach, Paul Limongi, spoke with Irish Breakdown about his star athlete. Notre Dame plans to deploy the Nebraska native as a Rover in their defense early on, but no matter the position, Limongi is confident that he will make an impact.

"He is very athletic,” Limongi said. "Teddy has the size, he is tall and long. He has great feet and runs extremely well. He’s an explosive hitter when he gets to the football. Teddy is also a very coachable kid, he easily adjusts and can really pick things up quickly. Whatever position he ends up, he will be successful.

His coverage skills as a linebacker were developed early in his prep career.

"As a sophomore, Teddy played cornerback,” Limongi explained. "We started (him) this past year at linebacker and wide receiver. Due to an injury, we had to move him to safety and he continued to play at a high level. He’s a really athletic kid and an impactful tackler, always around the football. Every single day he comes in with a growth mindset. He’s always looking to get better.”

This isn’t the first time that Limongi has coached a super versatile defender who would put on the Blue and Gold. Limongi was previously at Harry A. Burke High School in Omaha, which is the alma mater of current Irish starting safety Xavier Watts.

Like Watts, it didn’t take Limongi long to figure out just how talented Rezac is. It also goes well beyond the athletic traits that you can see on film, although they are impressive.

"It happened really early on,” stated the Westside head coach. “You can’t mistake that size. Teddy has this amazing charismatic competitive spirit. When the moment is biggest, he plays his best. He is incredibly well liked and a tireless worker. It’s no surprise that he’s gotten here, his work ethic speaks volumes.

"He is a very disciplined and well organized kid,” Limongi added. "He will love the structure that Notre Dame brings. In fact, he will probably become an even better version of himself with it."

For Irish fans, this recruitment feels like it happened very quickly. After being offered last Saturday, Rezac was on Notre Dame's campus on Sunday and committed just days later. According to his coach, Notre Dame had been doing their homework for a while. That presence went a long way to sealing the deal quickly.

"Notre Dame was one of the schools that really showed great interest in him earliest,” Limongi explained. "Teddy is a very loyal guy. He is incredibly appreciative to them for giving him the opportunity and the shot to be a student athlete at their great institution. He had a great time on the visit. When he came back, he just knew that it was the place for him. It became obvious.”

This isn’t the first time a Westside football player will be celebrated as a recruit, and it certainly won’t be the last. In fact, the program has a 2025 linebacker named Christian Jones who is already considered one of the best in his class, and holds an offer from Notre Dame.

Still, this commitment has a special feeling to it. When talent meets hard work, it becomes that much sweeter. Rezac exemplifies that.

"Everyone was really excited for Teddy,” Limongi noted. "The school, the community and his teammates, we were all so happy for him. He’s just such a high character kid that you are just thrilled when they achieve something that big. Good things happen to good people and Teddy is an example of that.”

Rezac had an expanding offer list heading into the decision. At that point, Rezac had earned offers from Notre Dame, Nebraska, Missouri and Boston College.

The 6-4, 195-pound athlete was a substantial difference maker on both sides of the ball for the 12-1 Westside squad. On defense, Rezac collected 62 total tackles, four tackles for loss, a sack, one forced fumble and two interceptions. On offense, he hauled in 32 receptions for 414 yards and four touchdowns.
