Family And Faith Helped Kedren Young Navigate Chaotic Recruiting Landscape
Making a college decision is never easy. For recruits, they are left to navigate the chaotic recruiting landscape, talk to a million coaches, hear a countless amount of pitches and attempt to make the right decision at such a young age. It’s never easy.
For 2024 Lufkin (Texas) High School running back Kedren Young, who opted for the Irish back on June 5th, his family was a massive support system for him. That includes his mother Sonna Young, who credits the family’s faith as the main reason Young ended up with the Irish.
“Our faith was huge for us,” Young said. “There was always a belief that Kedren would end up where he was meant to be. That guidance led him to Notre Dame.”
The Young family has no reservation demonstrating, and sharing their faith. This decision was not about anyone outside of Kedren and his family. It was a decision from a higher place, which his mother exemplified from Galatians 1:10, NIV.
“Am I now trying to win the approval of human beings, or of God? Or am I trying to please people? If I were still trying to please people, I would not be a servant of Christ.”
The focus was about being the best you can be, don’t worry about the outside noise and trust. That’s exactly what Kedren was able to do, which he owes a lot to his mother. Along the way, she was the encouragement and support he would need.
“I did my best to help him navigate the process,” Young explained. “That includes helping to schedule the visits, checking in with him, talking to some coaches and making sure that he was handling everything well. He knows that he is never alone.”
That support, once again, is ignited by their faith.
“You don’t have to keep up with other people,” Young recited. “If you’re getting your value out of how you measure up to your peers, you’re going to live in this proving mode of working harder, trying to impress, and that’s a never-ending cycle.
“You’re not competing with them; you’re competing with yourself,” she continued. “Be the best you that you can be.”
Now nearly two months after the decision, the Young family has not wavered. If anything, their devout belief has even strengthened their commitment. The Notre Dame program, and staff, is a big reason for that.
“It is a family atmosphere,” Young explained. “They make you feel like you are individually valued at such a high level. We couldn’t be any happier to be Irish, and how we got here.”
As a junior, Young was a dominant fixture for Lufkin. He was selected as aTexas District 7-5A D-I unanimous first-team honoree after he ran for 1,751 yards and 19 touchdowns. Young also averaged an impressive 7.39 yard per carry average.
That resume speaks volumes to how important of a landing Young was for Notre Dame. It is the full picture, however, that makes him and his family such a great fit.
