Notre Dame Gives Different A Perspective To Cornerback Marcellus Barnes Jr.

Tennessee standout cornerback Marcellus Barnes Jr. recaps recent trip to Notre Dame

With all the attention on the 2024 recruiting board for Notre Dame, the staff continues to do work on the trail and constantly evaluate new players who could be potential fits. One player that the staff has been in contact with for awhile now is Chattanooga (Tenn.) McCallie School star cornerback Marcellus Barnes Jr., who is fresh off a visit to campus this past weekend.

The Tennessee native enjoyed himself thoroughly during the recent visit. It really checked every box for Barnes.

“The visit went great,” Barnes said. “I was blown away by everything.

“Experiencing practice was really big for me,” Barnes continued. “Seeing how competitive and energetic everyone is was really something to see. The campus itself was also really beautiful.”

One thing that has stood out consistently no matter which recruit you talk to is the authenticity of the Notre Dame coaches. It was the same with Barnes and his time on campus this weekend.

“They were different from the conversations I have with other coaches,” he explained. “They took the time to educate me about academics and athletics. They made me feel special too. They made me feel like that could be home.”

Barnes did leave the visit without an offer extended from the Irish staff. It is something that he hopes will come soon as the coaches continue to have more in depth conversations about the Tennessee staff and how he could fit.

“I am hopeful about it,” Barnes said. “It’s definitely coming soon.”

Barnes has an expanding offer list that promises to grow exponentially once the dead period ends. Some of his notable offers to date include Virginia, Minnesota, Wake Forest and Vanderbilt among other. Programs such as Notre Dame, LSU, Kentucky and Louisville are also showing substantial interest.

The 6-0, 170-pound cover man put together a standout junior campaign for the McCallie Blue Tornado. Barnes recorded 33 total tackles, an interception and five pass breakups. He also recovered two fumbles and recorded half a tackle for loss.

It promises to continue to be a busy off-season for Barnes, who already took a visit to Baylor and Notre Dame, and also has visits scheduled to Virginia Tech, Wake Forest and Virginia as well.
