Linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa Sets Commitment Date
The recruitment for star 2024 Bellflower (Calif.) St. John Bosco linebacker Kyngstonn Viliamu-Asa is nearing the end following his three official visits to USC, Notre Dame and Ohio State last month. Viliamu-Asa is the biggest remaining defensive target on the board, being a player that they have valued for some time.
On Monday, the St. John Bosco standout announced that he had set an official visit date on July 23rd.
In an interview with Irish Breakdown following his final official visit to Ohio State two weekends ago, Viliamu-Asa laid out a timeline that a decision would be made within “the next couple of weeks.” True to his word, a decision has been made with an announcement coming before summer is over.
NOTRE DAME
The Irish staff has been high on the St. John Bosco star for some time now. Their core values seem to align really well, valuing education and spirituality at a very high level. Viliamu-Asa visited Notre Dame three weeks ago and said, “It isn’t just about football, which is great. That degree is something special. That campus is special and so are those fans. They really give you everything you need to be successful.”
USC
There was a lot of buzz coming out of Viliamu-Asa’s official visit to USC a month ago. The hometown Trojans went into that trip the assumed third team of his top schools but left with much more optimism. There may be some push for Viliamu-Asa to stay home. He said, “I have some friends who are going to be playing with them. There’s a lot of excitement around the program. For me, it’s trying to see if it’s the best fit for me.”
OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes got the last shot at Viliamu-Asa, which is especially interesting since they were the first program to offer him as a freshman. Coming into last month, Ohio State was viewed as a co-leader to land the California native. Following the trip, Viliamu-Asa said, “There’s never been a question that he wants me to be a Buckeye. I think my versatility can really fit well into Coach (Jim) Knowles’ defensive scheme.”
THE IMPORTANCE
It’s easy to see what makes Viliamu-Asa so special. The California native put together a dynamic junior campaign for the 13-1 St. John Bosco team. He finished the season with 111 total tackles, 8.5 tackles for loss and 5.5 sacks despite missing one game.
Combine that with his impressive recruiting rankings, including sitting as the No. 35 overall player in the 2024 class according to Rivals, Viliamu-Asa really checks all of the boxes. The 6-2, 225-pound defender is about as high floor of a player that you’ll find in the country.
For Notre Dame, linebacker recruiting has had a lot of question marks so far this cycle. With commitments from high upside-low floor players in Bodie Kahoun and Teddy Rezac, there is a need for a known commodity. That’s exactly what Viliamu-Asa brings.
He is also much needed positive momentum after a turbulent couple of days for Notre Dame. There is no question that Viliamu-Asa fits the program perfectly but we will know later this month if they did enough.
