Notre Dame Makes Immediate Impact On High Upside Athlete Nicholas Townsend
Notre Dame offered possibly one of the most versatile athletes in the 2025 class on Thursday in Spring (Texas) Dekaney star Nicholas Townsend. The Texas native is fresh off of a dominant junior campaign, playing all over the field for the Wildcats.
On offense, Townsend was used as a wide receiver, tight end, and wildcat quarterback for Dekaney. In 10 games, Townsend finished with 18 receptions for 431 yards and seven touchdowns, averaging 23.9 yards per reception. He also rushed six times for 46 years and two more scores.
Townsend was also a standout defensively, playing both linebacker and defensive end for the team. He finished as the team leader with 76 total tackles, as well as 11.5 tackles for loss, eight sacks, nine quarterback hurries, two passes defended and three fumble recoveries. The 6-4, 225-pound athlete can play a lot of different roles on the football field.
It should be no surprise that the Irish offered Townsend as an athlete, keeping the options open. Townsend spoke about the moment he received the offer, which was both unique and special.
"It was actually pretty funny,β Townsend told Irish Breakdown. "I was in class and just got finished with my final exam and my coach told me to come down to the office.
"My teammate NuNu (Tanook Hines) was already there with my coach.β he continued. "Coach (Marty) Biagi had already offered NuNu over the phone so he had NuNu ask me if I wanted the opportunity to play together in South Bend. That was a no-brainer yes.β
Even before the offer, Townsend had a high opinion on the Irish program. They bring a lot to the table, which he is very aware of.
"Notre Dame is a program that can be considered one of the best,β Townsend explained. "They have history. I rarely see a lot of people get offers from Notre Dame because your grades have to be on point. Iβm just happy we get to be part of that exclusive club.β
As one of the top athletes in high school football, Townsend is hearing from a long list of impressive schools. He has already secured offers from Notre Dame, Alabama, Texas, USC, Florida, Texas A&M, Nebraska, Ole Miss, TCU, Washington State, Baylor, Arizona State and Syracuse among others.
That attention is a blessing for Townsend. He has appreciated every school that has recruited him so far.
"Recruiting is going great,β he said. "Iβve gotten a ton of offers from some really good schools. The ones that stand out are Texas, Alabama, Notre Dame, USC Cal, UTSA and Florida just to name a few.β
There is a cemented timeline for Townsend, who doesnβt want the decision-making process to take too long. He is going to leave it to the man above and let the process take care of itself.
"I want to be committed by the start of my senior season,β he explained. "So hopefully God will push me towards a few good schools to choose from by then. As far as criteria somewhere that will embrace me and my family. Iβm big on family. I want a place that will help develop me on and off the field.β
Whoever lands Townsend is getting one of the highest-upside players in the 2025 recruiting class. He is rated as the No. 123 overall player and No. 5 tight end in the 2025 class according to 247Sports.
