Notre Dame Wide Receiver Cam Williams High On New Coach Mike Brown
With the Chansi Stuckey situation, there has been a lot of unrest about the future of the Notre Dame wide receiver position. For the 2024 recruiting class heading into signing day, there being a coaching change can be unsettling, and for good reason.
When that happened, 2024 Glen Ellyn (Ill.) Glenbard South star pass catcher Cam Williams was adamant that he was fully locked in. He kept a positive outlook on the situation.
"It sucks but I mean it’s the world of college football,” Williams told Irish Breakdown. "I’m going to trust the process for sure.”
With former Cincinnati and Wisconsin coach Mike Brown taking over the position, there is a calming feeling that has now been around the 2024 commits. That is especially true of Williams, who had a past relationship with Brown. The two have meshed well.
"He is just another great guy and a great talent developer,” Williams explained. "He worked with a great wide receiver who lived a quick trip down the road from me.
"He recruited me at Cincinnati and a little bit at Wisconsin as well,” Williams continued. "We had a really good relationship. He was always great to talk to.”
That wide receiver Williams was talking about was former Cincinnati Bearcat star Alec Pierce, who Notre Dame fans probably remember way too well from their matchup in 2021. Now playing for the Indianapolis Colts, Pierce actually played his high school ball at Glenbard West.
Obviously those similar backgrounds is a pretty encouraging thing for Williams, at least from a meshing perspective with Brown. He has gained a great reputation as a developer of talent who preaches the technical aspects of the position. Brown does his teaching with a calm demeanor and approachable personality.
"He is a laid back guy from when I’ve talked with him,” said Williams. "He’s really calm and smart. Coach Brown loves the game and understands it at a deep level.”
For a lot of Irish fans, the name Mike Brown may not have been a familiar one. There isn’t much flash behind this move but based on feedback, Brown may be the developer that the Notre Dame wide receivers need.
There will be some who will be in a “wait and see” approach. Until Brown does have some success, there won’t be a perfect answer to whether this was the right hire. According to Williams, he has no doubt if Marcus Freeman and Notre Dame made the right decision.
“I’m positive they did.”
Williams’ rise really started during a stellar junior campaign, exploding for 1,022 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns on just 47 receptions, a not too shabby 21.7 yard per catch average. Williams also scored another touchdown on the ground and returned two more interceptions for scores.
