Notre Dame has lost a key member of its 2024 recruiting class with Princeton (N.J.) The Hun School defensive tackle Owen Wafle announcing his decision to leave the class.

Wafle was Notre Dame's first commit in the 2024 class and he had been in the Irish class for over a year. The 6-3, 290-pound defensive tackle committed to Notre Dame on May 16th of 2022.

The loss leaves a hole in the middle of the defensive line with the Notre Dame class, but according to sources this wasn't necessarily a decision made by Wafle alone. This appears to be a situation where Notre Dame also had other priorities, and there was no longer room left in the class for the talented defensive tackle.

No matter how this decision came about, Notre Dame is now left without an inside defensive lineman in this class, which comes a year after only signing one true interior player in the 2023 class. Notre Dame is on the board with some 2024 inside players, but right now there is work to be done.

Notre Dame still has two defensive linemen committed, but both project as outside players at the moment. Hoschton (Ga.) Mill Creek defensive end Cole Mullins is a pure outside player that could play either Vyper or eventually field end.

Charlotte (N.C.) Christian edge Bryce Young projects as a field end at the moment, but with his frame he could potentially grow into an interior player in the same fashion his dad did back in the 1990's. His father - Bryant Young - signed with Notre Dame as a 6-3, 245-pound linebacker but eventually grew into a 6-3, 300-pound defensive tackle and first round NFL Draft pick.
