Ohio State Buckeyes WBB Fall To No. 13 in AP Rankings

Kevin McGuff's Ohio State Buckeyes women's basketball team took a tumble in their rankings after their first loss.

Ohio State has already had an up-and-down start to the season.

The Buckeyes (1-1, 0-0 Big Ten) fell six spots to No. 13 in the Associated Press rankings Monday after a loss to then-No. 21 USC in the season opener.

Ohio State followed the loss with a 50-point blowout at home over IUPUI Sunday, likely softening their descent in the rankings.

Graduate guard Jacy Sheldon put up 28 points against the Trojans but didn't have much help around her from one of the top overall scoring offenses in the nation last year.

However, Sheldon took on a much smaller role against the Jaguars, as all five starters scored in double figures and the team shot 53.7 percent from the field.

None of the team played more than 20 minutes Sunday, as all players saw the floor. The win was highlighted by senior forward Karla Vres posting her first points as a Buckeye in her second season.

The remainder of the 2023 calendar year poses a fair threat to the Buckeyes, with two ranked bouts against No. 15 Tennessee on the road on Dec. 3 and No. 3 UCLA at home on Dec. 18.

Ohio State is one of just four ranked Big Ten teams, behind No. 2 Iowa and ahead of No. 18 Indiana and No. 20 Maryland, both of which had top-10 losses this last week.

The Buckeyes face off against Boston College (2-1, 0-0 ACC) Thursday at 7 p.m. from Value City Arena in Columbus.
