When Will Ohio State's QB Question Finally Get an Answer?
The revelation of the long-awaited answer to Ohio State's starting-quarterback question might be only a day away.
On Wednesday, Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day is scheduled to speak with the media, along with three of his quarterbacks: Tristan Gebbia, Kyle McCord and Devin Brown.
The latter two QBs have spent a majority of the offseason in a battle for the vacant starting position, which was left by last year's leading man C.J. Stroud when he declared for the NFL Draft.
Fall pre-season activities are set to begin the following day (Thursday, August 3) with an open practice in front of Buckeye Nation.
Despite that, naming a starting quarterback during Wednesday's media availability seems like an unlikely choice.
Yes, entering Fall camp with an official starting quarterback also allows whomever it is to get more closely acquainted with the rest of the first-team players, rather than having to split reps with the other QB contender(s).
However, it does not seem like the Buckeyes are in a rush to make a decision.
As for why Day would keep this secret for so long, perhaps he is following the Tom Allen school of thinking.
The head Indiana football coach said during Big Ten Media Days last week that he has made his private decision on who will start for the Hoosiers, but won't make it public yet so Ohio State has less time to prepare before their season-opening game.
A smart strategy...if you're IU.
SI Sportsbook has the Buckeyes projected as 27.5-point victors over the Crimson and Cream on September 2. Keeping your starting quarterback a secret when you are that heavy a favorite does not seem worth it.
The other possibility is the Buckeyes rolling with a two-quarterback rotation during the first handful of regular-season games, before determining a sole option for the end of the year and beyond.
When asked about this system during his podium time at Big Ten Media Days, Day did not rule it out as a possibility.
It is often said patience is a virtue. Maybe the Ohio State faithful simply need to stop asking the question and get comfortable waiting, trusting instead in Day's game plan for the season.
