Ohio State Football Raises Salaries For Assistant Coaches
Brian Hartline is not just about to become the hopeful play-caller for Ohio State football, but also a very wealthy assistant coach.
So are eight others Buckeye assistant coaches, according to the Columbus Dispatch.
Nine coaches received bumps in pay raises for the impending season. Hartline, who was promoted from pass-game coordinator to full-time offensive coordinator, will make the most at $1.6 million.
Last season, former offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson only made $1.4 million. Following the Buckeyes' College Football Playoff berth, Wilson departed the program to become the head coach at Tulsa.
Five total assistant coaches will have seven-figure salaries in 2023. Offensive line coach Justin Frye will earn $1 million following his promotion to run-game coordinator. Secondaries coach Tim Walton will make the same following his promotion to defensive passing game coordinator. Defensive line coach Larry Johnson will earn just $1.167 million after earning a 3 percent pay raise.
Defensive coordinator Jim Knowles, who was hired away from Oklahoma State last offseason after helping the Cowboys finish with the No. 4 defense, already was making over $1 million in 2022. This year, he'll earn roughly a 3 percent pay raise to make his salary $1.96 million.
Special teams coordinator Parker Fleming also saw a six-figure raise to his salary, going from $300,000 to $500,000 on a two-year deal.
In total, the Buckeyes will pay 10 assistant coaches $9.23 million in 2023. Alabama is the only other public university paying its on-field coaching staff over $9 million per season. Earlier this month, the Crimson Tide announced it would give $9.17 million to its 10 assistants.
