Bears ‘Not Trading’ Former Ohio State QB Justin Fields

Despite lingering rumors of a potential trade, Justin Fields will be in Chicago for his third NFL season.
In this story:

When the Chicago Bears clinched the No. 1 overall pick in the upcoming NFL draft, the consensus was they would trade back for a haul of picks to add to their war chest.

After all, former Ohio State Buckeyes quarterback Justin Fields showed major strides of improvement in year two. However, there were still lingering rumors that the Bears could trade Fields and opt to draft a new franchise quarterback with the No. 1 pick.

Well, those rumors can be put to bed as Peter King of NBC Sports reported that general manager Ryan Poles is standing behind the former Buckeye quarterback.

Poles spoke softly but urgently in 50 minutes. He was supportive of quarterback Justin Fields, saying “we’ve got to see it through” in giving Fields a chance to be the team’s long-term starter. It’s clear he’s not trading Fields, and he’s not picking a quarterback high in this draft. He left little doubt the Bears will trade the first overall pick and said he’d spoken to three teams at the Combine about a deal.

A potential trade of Fields, of course, would not have benefited the Bears. In his second season in the NFL he threw for 2,242 yards and 17 touchdowns, adding a staggering 1,143 yards and eight touchdowns on the ground.

Simply put, a quarterback like Fields does not come around often. Rather than trading him away, the Bears are opting for the smart choice to continue to build around him and help him develop.
