Ohio State Buckeyes Coach Ryan Day Extends Winning Streak vs. Unranked Teams
Ryan Day extended his winning streak against unranked teams to 34-0 on Saturday when the Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the Maryland Terrapins, 37-17.
Day's victorious trend is the longest of any coach in college football history to begin their career, since the Associated Press (AP) began publishing their top-25 poll back in 1936.
Some of these games have been closer than others. To name a few, Day and the Buckeyes defeated unranked Minnesota 45-31 to open the 2021 season, prevailed 26-17 at Nebraska later that same year, and got the better of Maryland on the road 43-30 in 2022.
Along with extending his impressive streak defeating unranked teams, Saturday's victory against the Terrapins gave Day the 50th win of his Ohio State head-coaching career. Day is the second-fastest Ohio State head coach to reach this milestone, sitting only behind Urban Meyer.
It took Meyer 54 games to reach 50 wins (50-4), which is two games faster than Day with 56 (50-6). Day is just the seventh football coach to reach the 50-win mark in Buckeyes history, joining a list that includes legends like Woody Hayes, Earl Bruce and Jim Tressel.
The Buckeyes helmsman has received criticism from fans in the past for his 1-2 record against Michigan and lack of a National Championship. Despite a handful of losses on his record as Ohio State's head coach, Day has had a strong seven-year stretch with the Scarlet and Gray.
Day looks to earn his 51st victory next weekend when the Ohio State Buckeyes travel to West Lafayette, Indiana to take on the Purdue Boilermakers. The game will kick off at noon Eastern and air on NBC's streaming service, Peacock.
