Ohio State Buckeyes coach Ryan Day announced Monday night during his appearance on "Buckeye Roundtable" on 97.1 The Fan that backup quarterback Devin Brown would miss at least a week or two after he was injured in the third quarter in Saturday's 20-12 win over No. 7 Penn State.

Brown, who has played sparingly in a designed role for the offense, came in on second-and-goal at the Nittany Lions’ 6-yard line in hopes of igniting a spark. Brown's legs have benefitted the No. 3 Buckeyes (7-0, 4-0 Big Ten) this season, and the plan looked to be to trust his mobility to punch in the score.

Brown faked a handoff to running back Chip Trayanum, kept the ball and ran toward the end zone, but Penn State's potent run defense was ready, twisting him up near the goal line for a loss of down. As the pile was broken up, Brown remained on the ground.

Trainers assisted Brown off the field as it appeared he had injured his right ankle. After the game, he was seen leaving Ohio Stadium on crutches with his right foot in a walking boot.

Day said postgame that Brown hurt “a lower extremity" but did not mention which body part was affected by the play.

Brown's injuries have impacted the quarterback room in various ways. Expected to battle for the starting quarterback job, limitations in spring practice opened the door for Devin Brown to claim the title.

Ohio State is expected to turn to senior Oregon State transfer Tristan Gebbia for the title of QB2. Day also mentioned true freshman Lincoln Kienholz as an option in case of an emergency. Both players are expected to work with the second-team offense in preparation for Saturday's contest against Wisconsin.

"Tristan has really got a great understanding of what we're trying to do, and Lincoln's growing every day, I think he's got a bright future," Day said. "So if need be, those guys will be ready to go."

Through five games this season, Brown has 197 passing yards with two touchdowns and an interception.
