CBS Sports' Gary Danielson Doesn't 'Love' Current NIL, Transfer Rules
Name, Image and Likeness and the transfer portal is a scary place.
CBS Sports color commentator Gary Danielson said at Big Ten Media Days Wednesday that he not a fan of NIL being taken advantage of by donors as well as the current state of the transfer portals, which allows players to transfer once while remaining eligible for the following season.
"When you're a young player, there should be consequences to decisions. I mean, what's the lesson you learn?" Danielson said. "You get recruited and you you sign with a school and you make this big decision, and then you're there for one year, and you say, 'No, I'm going to jump to a better deal.' That's not how life works. So I don't love the immediate transfer rule."
Danielson said he understands the immediate transfer rule is "here to stay" and if he were in college in this day and age he "probably would have transferred too."
Danielson acknowledged, though, that the benefits the transfer portal provides.
"For Joe Burrow, he might not even be an NFL quarterback if it wasn't for the transfer, so I get it," Danielson said. "Sometimes I wish they'd be a little more patient and give it a try."
Ole Miss Rebels head coach Lane Kiffin said last week at Southeastern Conference Media Days that NIL has divulged into pay-for-play, and Danielson also believes that is what NIL is being used for in some instances.
"I don't understand how money is not going to be used to acquire talent," Danielson said. "It's not allowed to do that, but how is it not going to be used that way. If you've got $10 million, you're going go out and use it to acquire talent."
Various states have enacted legislation, but like Big Ten commissioner Tony Petitti said Wednesday, until there is Congressional legislation that creates a uniform policy, NIL will likely continue to be a free-for-all for donors with the deepest pockets.
