A public records request by The Columbus Dispatch revealed the Ohio State Department of Athletics self-reported two minor NCAA rule violations from the 2022-23 football season.

The violations surrounded the Buckeyes' use of prohibited equipment during off-season practices, and illegal contact made during a potential recruit's official campus visit.

Proceeding in order of the infractions, the 'use of prohibited equipment' violation occurred during practice on February 13 when Ohio State players were pushing a modified blocking sled.

NCAA rules prohibit a team from using equipment specific to their sport during offseason workouts within a specified section of the athletic calendar which, for football, includes February 13.

Ohio State was informed of the violation by another school's compliance staff after they had seen a video of the blocking-sled workout on Twitter. The Buckeyes reacted by shortening the duration of several athletics-related events by 30 minutes for the week of March 5.

The second violation took place during the home game against Wisconsin on September 24, 2022. While a potential recruit was on his official visit, he was taken to meet a former player by an Ohio State staff member.

Interactions between former players and recruits are permitted, but the aforementioned meeting occurred at an off-campus tailgate party across the street from Ohio State's campus, resulting in a violation.

Both infractions were designated Level III, which is the lowest rating on the NCAA's scale.

No punitive actions were taken by the NCAA in response to the violations.
