'Going To Inherit A Machine': Buckeyes Top RJ Young's Offseason QB Battles List

The Ohio State Buckeyes have a choice to make out of fall camp between quarterbacks Kyle McCord and Devin Brown.

There's obviously quarterback duels going on around the country. A few that come to mind are Georgia, Alabama and Ole Miss, among others.

However, at the top of Fox Sports' RJ Young's "quarterback derbies" is the battle in Columbus between Ohio State Buckeyes gunslingers Kyle McCord and Devin Brown. Young said on his podcast "The Number One College Football Show" that quarterback play in the College Football Playoff era is "what moves the needle" in regards to a team's success.

"Joe Burrow, Trevor Lawrence, we can keep going on down the line here, Tua Tagovailoa. These are guys that are not only are great in our sport, but become the next great group of quarterbacks at the next level," Young said. "So the guy that wins between Kyle McCord and Devin Brown feels like the dude that is going to inherit a machine that is capable of getting back to the College Football Playoff."

Young then addressed the elephant in the room: beating Michigan. It's what Ohio State's program is built on, one of its annual three goals and something that hasn't happened in 1,266 days.

"One of the reasons Justin Fields gets to walk around being Justin Fields in Columbus: he's undefeated against Michigan. C.J. Stroud, not so much," Young said. "Kyle McCord might get a couple opportunities, Devin Brown might get a couple opportunities, but whomever it is, that guy's got to hit the ground running and he's going to do it with the best wide receiver in the sport in Marvin Harrison Jr."

Young said he believes McCord will be the one to jog onto the field for the Buckeyes' first offensive possession in 2023, but he isn't counting out Brown's chances.

"I would be remiss if I didn't say Devin Brown can't sling it and there's a reason he's a quarterback at Ohio State," Young said. "There's a reason he's staying to fight for the job."

He also happens to like Brown's jersey number switch from No. 15 to 33.

"Now, we got to give that 33 back to the quarterback, and see, if the quarterback's wearing 33, that's got to change the mentality of your football team into one that's a lot more physical," Young said.
