Buckeyes Ex Kirk Herbstreit Calls Out 'Jack***' Fans
The Ohio State Buckeyes are 1-0 to start the new season, but you may not have been able to tell that judging by the reaction the win over Indiana got on social media from fans.
For a fanbase that expects its team to compete for a national championship and beat the Michigan Wolverines every year, they expected more than the 23-3 win over the Hoosiers. A win wasn't enough, and they let that be known afterward.
Yet, just like fans are free to criticize their Buckeyes, the team and even former Buckeyes are free to strike back.
"There’s a standard, and then there’s a psychotic standard," former Buckeyes quarterback now-turned ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit said recently on the Pat McAfee Show. "And I would say that the 15% that represent Ohio State on social media fall into that category of ‘psychotic.’ They’re out of their minds. ... They’re just such jackasses. They drive me crazy with everything that they do.”
This isn't the first time that the now ESPN College Gameday analyst has spoken out against the more rabid fans in Buckeyes Nation. In the offseason, Herbstreit called out the fans who wanted coach Ryan Day fired for losing to the Georgia Bulldogs in the college football playoff semifinal last season.
Herbstreit wasn't the only one to comment on the criticism, as even current players spoke up during their meetings with the media this week.
"I can promise you that nobody here cares at all about what they say," senior tight end Cade Stover said. "We appreciate all their support and everything else. But when it comes down to Xs and Os, they don’t see the thousands of reps we put in and Kyle and Devin (Brown) put in."
Stover and the Buckeyes have moved on from the 20-point win in their season-opener against Indiana to their home opener versus the Youngstown State Penguins, where they are a 41-point favorite.
Kickoff for Saturday's game is scheduled for noon eastern time as the Buckeyes will welcome the Penguins to Ohio Stadium.
