Buckeyes Need to 'Get A Feel' for Brian Hartline's Offense

While Brian Hartline settles into the offensive coordinator role, Ryan Day detailed how his calling plays has gone so far this spring.
In this story:

With spring football starting up across the country it gives coaching staffs a chance to evaluate their roster as well as refresh everyone on the playbook.

For the Ohio State Buckeyes, though, spring practices will also be their first glance at Brian Hartline in his new role as offensive coordinator. While fans are eager to hear reports of how Hartline's offense looks, Ryan Day made sure to temper expectations for now.

“You don't really know until you get into a game how that works," Day said. "But we're going to try this with these next couple of weeks to try to get some game type situations and get that going."

"A big part of it right now in the first 10 practices is installing and fundamentals, and then we try to start playing the game more."

Hartline is of course taking over for former offensive coordinator Kevin Wilson who was hired to be Tulsa's next head coach. In his final season at Ohio State the Buckeyes fielded one of the best offenses in college football, averaging 44.2 points per game on 490.7 yards of total offense.

For now, though, Day is taking it day by day in spring and isn't worried about how the offense looks yet

"The best you can do is just kind of get out there and call it and just see what happens," Day said. "Try to change the situation the best you can but you don't quite really get a feel for it until you’re in the game."

As for Saturday's scrimmage, the Buckeyes "will probably put a game plan together and see how it goes."

There's no way to know how good Hartline's offense will look compared to Wilson's, especially this early in spring practice. The Buckeyes have no shortage of weapons, though, and could once again boast one of college football's best offenses in year one under Hartline.
