WATCH: Michigan Wolverines Build Lead on Controversial Touchdown vs. Ohio State Buckeyes
Some might think Ohio State Buckeyes star cornerback Denzel Burke had the interception. Others will say Michigan Wolverines receiver Roman Wilson hauled in the score.
Regardless of what the fans think, the officials stood with the ruling on the field and awarded Michigan the touchdown and the 14-3 lead in the second quarter of Saturday’s highly-anticipated meeting between the two rivals in Ann Arbor.
With Michigan leading 7-3 in the second quarter, Wilson and Burke battled for the ball to the ground in the end zone. For those watching the play live, it seemed like a no-doubt touchdown, but further review showed that Burke ripped the ball away while battling to the ground before Wilson could’ve had time to compete the process of the catch.
Take a look at the play:
It’s possible that the officials saw the possibility to overturn the call, but didn’t have enough video evidence in order to do so.
Ohio State coach Ryan Day did all he could to convince the officiating crew of why it was an interception, but it was no use.
Despite trailing 14-3, the Buckeyes responded with an eventual touchdown from Emeka Egbuka in the second quarter and were only down 14-10 headed into halftime. The controversial call could certainly prove to be a game-changing sequence in a contest that’s almost certain to come down to the wire.
Regardless of the call, it was an impressive play from Burke. This season, he’s posted 14 total tackles, eight passes defended and one interception.
