One Outlet Believes 2023 Should Be Ryan Day's 'Last Season in Columbus'

Five weeks into the season, the Ohio State Buckeyes sits ranked No. 3 in the country at 5-0 overall and 2-0 in the Big Ten. So why is there talk of a Ryan Day hot seat?

Back in July, SEC analyst Paul Finebaum postulated that Day might not survive 2023. Why not? Because winning isn't everything in Columbus. You have to win the right games and ultimately a national title.

Ohio State boasts 47 wins and a .886 win percentage since 2019. However, Finebaum said in the summer that Day's pedigree and resume are not worthy of job security due to his track record against Michigan.

Five games into the season has anything changed? SBNation doesn't think so.

"If two losses to Michigan, an embarrassing 52-24 blowout loss to Alabama in the 2020 national title, a blown 16-point lead to Clemson in the 2019 College Football Playoff and a blown 14-point lead in the fourth quarter against Georgia in the 2022 College Football Playoff weren’t enough, Saturday’s lackluster performance against Maryland at home — a microcosm of the entire Ryan Day tenure — should be all that you need see from the Ohio State head coach to know that things are never going to change.

"It won’t be, but it should be his last season in Columbus."

A lackluster showing against Maryland, and the early season issues certainly didn't help the narrative against Day.

However, given the fact that the Buckeyes are once again undefeated and in control of their own destiny, and given the amount of success Day has had during his time in Columbus, the assertions here are a bit off base.

That said, wins over Penn State on Oct. 21 and Michigan to end the season on Nov. 25 would go a long way to ending this discussion.

But first, the Buckeyes will have to take care of business against Purdue in West Lafayette, where they have lost four of the last six matchups.
