Buckeyes Ezekiel Elliott's Free Agency Prospects Will Be 'Humbling', says Executive
Former Ohio State Buckeyes great Ezekiel Elliott was released by the Dallas Cowboys last week, after seven seasons, three Pro Bowls, two NFL All-Pro nods, and two rushing titles.
Still, according to reports, it appears that Elliott might find it hard to locate a new home for the 2023 season.
In fact, in a recent article from Cowboys insider Jori Epstein, multiple sources indicated to Epstein that Elliott's prospects could end up being very 'humbling'.
“I Think teams are mostly paying for the name,” One NFL executive told Epstein. “I think the open market will be humbling for him.”
That type of comment may seem hard to believe about a running back who has, in his seven years in Dallas, rushed for over 1,000 yards in three of those seasons. While, in two of those seasons, finishing just shy at 983 yards (2017) and 979 Yards (2020).
And in both of those seasons, Elliott did not play a full season, missing six games in 2017 and one game in 2020.
However, even with that type of production in mind, another NFL scout also echoed the sentiments of a tough market for Elliott.
“The (running back) market is pretty unforgiving, particularly this free agency,” the scout told Epstein, “he's still young 'enough' with a history of production to land an opportunity/role somewhere. And I don't think anyone can deny his toughness.”
One way or another, Elliott will eventually find a new NFL home.
His talent on the field, and his leadership qualities inside the locker room, are both too hard to ignore for that not to happen.
Unfortunately, it appears as though it might not come at the price point he has earned or that he expects.
