Power Rankings Reveal Ohio State's Bright QB Future

Even after losing C.J. Stroud to the NFL Draft, Ohio State's future at the quarterback position looks good.

The future is bright for the Ohio State Buckeyes at quarterback as spring practice is underway, kicking off a fierce competition for the starting job.

With C.J. Stroud off the NFL, where does the Buckeyes' quarterback future rank among the rest of college football?

ESPN's latest power rankings have the Buckeyes quarterback room coming in second, behind the USC Trojans. Meaning Ohio State dropped from the No. 1 spot where they were a year ago.

"Like [Lincoln] Riley, Buckeyes coach Ryan Day has established enough credibility to churn out top quarterbacks every year, either from recruiting or the portal," ESPN said. "Kyle McCord is likely the next man up. He was ESPN's No. 31 overall recruit in 2021 and could become Ohio State's QB1 for multiple seasons. Day also brought in Devin Brown, ESPN's No. 81 recruit in the 2022 class and No. 4 pocket passer."

The unknown of McCord and Brown is likely a big part of the reason that Ohio State didn't stay in the top spot, compared to USC having the return of the Heisman-winning Caleb Williams. But this ranking wasn't just about what teams have on there currently; it also considers commits.

ESPN noted that the decommitment of top 2024 quarterback Dylan Raiola hurt them, but Ohio State did respond quickly, landing Lincoln Kienholz in the 2023 class.
