Ryan Day Updates Ohio State QB Battle After Saturday Scrimmage

Saturday's scrimmage gave Ohio State Buckeyes head coach Ryan Day a look at how Kyle McCord and Devin Brown succeed, fail and respond in simulated game play situations.

The Ohio State Buckeyes held an open scrimmage Saturday, putting quarterbacks Kyle McCord and Devin Brown through in-game situations.

The two both got first-team repetitions and while they weren't getting hit at all, it was another opportunity for head coach Ryan Day to see who might be the one to trot out with the offense in the season opener against Indiana on Sept. 2. Day updated the battle between the two, saying that he looks at individual success as well as how the team around him does.

"If you just looked at one drive, you could come to a conclusion real easy. But over time, I think that's what we talk about these in the meeting room there, we talk about where are the quarterbacks at, it's hard to tell until you stack these days," Day said. "We'll grade every single snap today, we'll see how everybody graded out. But at the end of the day, we have to move the offense into the end zone. That's our job as a quarterback. However we do that, everybody has a different style, but that leadership, means a lot."

McCord had one of the best throws of the day on a 50-yard pitch-and-catch to wide receiver Jayden Ballard for a touchdown while showing flashes with his legs as well.

He moved around in the pocket, delivering throws on the run, but on a read option play on the goal line, McCord appeared to run in for a touchdown but was marked down and stopped in the backfield at the 2-yard line. Day said since the defensive line can't hit the quarterback, he was a little more lenient with sacks and ruling them down.

However, after the alleged touchdown scamper, McCord ripped off his helmet, chucked the football to the ceiling of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center in celebration and was mobbed by the entire offensive unit.

Day said he thought McCord was better in the second half of the scrimmage.

"Early on, it was just OK. But again it's hard to tell, got to look at the film, but he certainly flashed there at the end," Day said. "Had some energy about him, had some leadership and I think the whole offense was feeding off of that."

Though to the naked eye, it looked like McCord had the edge Saturday, it's a small sample size in just practice No. 5 of 15 this spring, and Day understands that.

"Now, one practice is one practice. Can you learn and grow from it?" Day said. "I learned just the other day a quote that the brain doesn't grow from success, it grows from failure. So there was a lot of failure on this field today, so who can grow from that and build and we'll see. But I thought there's a lot of film to look at, the guys moved them down the field, especially in the second half of the scrimmage but a lot of football left here this spring."
