Could the Styles Brothers Both Play in the Buckeyes Secondary Next Season?

Former Notre Dame Fighting Irish wide receiver Lorenzo Styles Jr. announced he was entering the transfer portal Friday.

Buckeye Nation has gotten a glimpse of safety Sonny Styles' abilities as a long, athletic defensive back who can cover and make hard hits as well.

However, what if there was another Styles in the Ohio State Buckeyes secondary? Say, Sonny's older brother, former Notre Dame wide receiver Lorenzo Styles Jr. who entered the transfer portal Friday.

Coming out of Pickerington Central High School in the class of 2021, Lorenzo Styles was the No. 115 player nationally, the No. 20 wide receiver, and the fifth-best player in Ohio.

He was recruited by Ohio State, given an offer on Dec. 7, 2018, taking four unofficial visits to campus within the span of a year.

In two seasons with the Fighting Irish, Lorenzo Styles played in all 26 games, catching 54 passes for 684 yards and two touchdowns. Against Ohio State in the season opener on Sept. 3, 2022, Lorenzo Styles had Notre Dame's first catch of the game for 54 yards — the longest reception of his career.

This spring in South Bend, IN., though, Lorenzo Styles took repetitions at cornerback instead of at receiver, and, according to ESPN's Pete Thamel, he wants to make a "permanent" switch to playing defense.

Seeing both of his sons playing defense at his alma mater would likely make their father, former Ohio State linebacker Lorenzo Styles Sr., a happy man. He played in 25 games for the Buckeyes from 1993-94 before being drafted in the third round, No. 77 overall to the Atlanta Falcons in the 1995 NFL Draft.

The Buckeyes currently have eight cornerbacks on the roster, headlined by Denzel Burke, Jordan Hancock, Jyaire Brown, Ole Miss transfer Davison Igbinosun and class of 2023 four-star Jermaine Mathews Jr.
