Ohio State Wrestling Champ Sammy Sasso Shot in Columbus

Ohio State Buckeyes wrestling star Sammy Sasso was involved in a robbery attempt on Friday night that left him hospitalized.

Two-time Big Ten wrestling champion and Ohio State Buckeyes star Sammy Sasso was shot in Columbus, Ohio Friday night, according to a statement from wrestling coach Tom Ryan. 

The incident occurred around 8:30 p.m. near Kroger on N. High Street, when Sasso was reportedly involved in a robbery attempt, which ended with him being shot in the stomach before being transported to The Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center, where he is "continuing to be cared for and monitored."

According to Ryan, Sasso's injuries are not life-threatening. The Buckeyes star is expected to make a full recovery following a second surgery Saturday morning.

"Our coaching staff, along with members of the wrestling program and Athletics administrators, are grateful for the caregivers at WMC, thankful Sasso's injuries are not life-threatening and are supporting Sasso and his family," Day's statement read. "OSUPD is assisting Columbus Police with the ongoing investigation.

Sasso is a Nazareth, Pennsylvania native, and was a fifth-year senior for the Buckeyes last season, where he's earned two NCAA runner-up distinctions on top of his conference championships. Sasso has a career record of 94-12, which is highlighted by a career-best 29 wins last season and a 16-1 finish during the 2020-21 campaign.

He still has remaining college eligibility for Ohio State.
