One Former Buckeyes Player Stands Alone in Super Bowl LVII
The big game kicks off Sunday and, for the second year in a row, the Ohio State Buckeyes will be represented ... barely.
After the Cincinnati Bengals had four Buckeyes on their AFC Champion roster a season ago, Philadelphia Eagles running back Trey Sermon is the lone Ohio State alumnus in Super Bowl LVII.
Sermon has just two carries for 19 yards for the Eagles this season as the fourth-string running back on Philadelphia's depth chart.
As part of the Super Bowl-week festivities, the Marietta, GA. native participated in an abbreviated game of Madden 23 with RDC Gaming's Mark Phillips.
He played as the Eagles and Phillips as Philadelphia's Super Bowl counterpart, the Kansas City Chiefs.
Sermon recorded an interception and threw a 25-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Quez Watkins. He had to leave with the team before the game of Madden concluded, leading 6-0 after missing the extra point attempt.
Before his NFL career, Sermon spent his graduate season at Ohio State, amassing 870 yards and four touchdowns in the COVID-19-shortened eight-game 2020-21 season.
Sermon broke Eddie George's single-game rushing record, recording 331 yards in the Big Ten Championship against Northwestern. He ran for 193 yards against the Clemson Tigers in the College Football Playoff Semifinal before getting injured on the first play against Alabama in the CFP National Championship.
He was drafted No. 88 overall by the San Francisco 49ers in the 2021 NFL Draft where he spent one season, carrying the ball 41 times for 167 yards and one touchdown.
