Ohio State vs. Michigan State: Preview, How to Watch & Betting Odds

The Ohio State Buckeyes will look to snap their five-game losing streak against the Michigan State Spartans.
In this story:

Sunday at Value City Arena will present the Ohio State Buckeyes with an opportunity they haven't captured since Jan. 21: winning a game.

Their five-game losing streak will be put to the test against the Michigan State Spartans (15-9, 7-6 Big Ten) who had lost three of the past four prior to a 63-58 victory against the Maryland Terrapins Tuesday.

Ohio State (11-13, 3-10 Big Ten) has had recent success against Michigan State in Columbus, winning four of the last five against the Spartans at home.

The Buckeyes have lost 10 of the last 11 games, nine of those defeats coming single-digit differences.

Michigan State has a top-heavy trio to its lineup that is led by guards Tyson Walker and A.J. Hoggard and forward Joey Hauser.

Walker shoots the 3 at a 41.6 percent clip, pacing the Spartans with 13.9 points per game. Hauser presents a similar matchup issue, shooting an even 41 percent from deep while hauling in 7.1 rebounds per game — the 10th-best average in the Big Ten.

Ohio State is coming off a season-worst 1-for-14 from beyond the arc against the Northwestern Wildcats and it doesn't get any easier for the Buckeyes Sunday, as the Spartans enter play with the lowest opponent 3-point percentage in the Big Ten at 29.4 percent.

Head coach Chris Holtmann said Friday that the "coaching fraternity is special" and that he considers Michigan State head coach Tom Izzo a mentor and friend.

"He reaches out. I think he tried to call me in the second half of the Wisconsin game and I obviously didn't have my cell phone on," Holtmann said. "He's obviously a guy that I listen to because he's got incredible wisdom and he's been through it."
