Two of the most historic foreign sporting teams could be calling Ohio Stadium home sometime within the next few years.
Manchester City and Chelsea, two of the oldest soccer teams in the English Premier League, are expected to play a match inside of the Shoe. The news of this coming exhibition has come from numerous sources close to the futbol league.
Each of these sources have said the game will happen, but is unclear on an expected date for the match.
Hosting a soccer match will be a familiar task for the facilities crew at Ohio Stadium. Whether the teams are foreign or domestic, the Shoe has seen its fair share of soccer over the years.
Spain's Real Madrid and France's Paris Saint-Germain took the field for an exhibition match at Ohio Stadium in 2016. Before that, the Shoe was the home field for the Columbus Crew.
The then-brand new Major League Soccer (MLS) club played each of their home games at Ohio Stadium between 1996 and 1998 before the construction of Mapfre Stadium was finished.
News of a professional sporting event coming to Ohio Stadium is nothing new for Ohio State Buckeyes fans. Just last week, the National Hockey League announced a Stadium Series game between the Columbus Blue Jackets and Detroit Red Wings would take place at the Shoe on March 1, 2025.
As of this article's publishing, it is unclear whether or not this game will be preceded by the soccer match. All fans can do now it wait for an official announcement from the English Premier League...and have their credit cards ready to jump on tickets.
