Ohio State Buckeyes Golfer Neal Shipley Makes Masters Cut; Locks In Lowest Amateur Score
Heading into Thursday's opening round at Augusta, Ohio State Buckeyes golf star Neal Shipley might've had weekend plans back home in Columbus.
If so, they're now canceled.
On Friday, Shipley carded at 4-over 76 in the second round of the 88th Masters for a 3-over total over the first two rounds. That's good enough to keep playing over the weekend.
Shipley fought through horrendous conditions at Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia, that included 40 mile-per-hour wind gusts throughout most of the day to come in well under the 6-over cut line.
The Buckeyes standout was tied for 17th after the first round after shooting a 1-under 71 and now finds himself tied for 30th with names like Shane Lowry, Will Zalatoris, and last week's Valero Texas Open winner, Akshay Bhatia.
Maybe more impressively, Shipley has locked down the lowest score by an amateur and will be the only amateur playing the weekend.
Shipley carded four birdies on Nos. 2, 3, 13, and 15, and bogeys on holes 4, 7, 10, 12, 14, and 18. He also had trouble with the par 4 11th, where he made a double-bogey 6.
Tied atop the leader board are Bryson DeChambeau, Scottie Scheffler, and Max Homa at 6-under 138.
