Ohio State Buckeyes Golfer Neal Shipley Heads Into Sunday at Masters
Ohio State Buckeyes golfer Neal Shipley had his share of issues at Augusta National on Saturday's moving day. But so did just about everyone else.
Just two golfers shot sub-70 rounds on Saturday as course conditions became more difficult as the day went on.
Shipley shot an 8-over 80 on Saturday, on the heels of Friday's 76 and Thursday's 71. Shipley, who is tied for 52nd place for the tournament, is the lone amateur to make the cut on Friday, earning his opportunity to play over the weekend.
The Buckeye shot just 2-over on his first nine with bogeys on the par-4 No. 3 and par-4 No. 7. He carded pars on the other seven holes. But like most everyone else on the course on Saturday, he had problems later in the day, with four bogeys and a double bogey six on the par-4 18th.
Shipley will have a huge honor for Sunday's final round, as he'll be paired with Tiger Woods, who is also tied for 52nd place. Woods shot an uncharacteristic 10-over 82 on Saturday, indicating how difficult the course really was.
The grad student will also be in Butler Cabin on Sunday for the awards ceremony as the tournament's low amateur. So he'll have a front row seat to see whoever wins the latest green jacket.
Former Texas Longhorns golfer and current No. 1 in the world, Scottie Scheffler, retook the lead on Saturday by carding a 1-under 71 after rounds of 66 and 72 for a total of 7-under for the week.
Dealing with conditions and pin placements that made the pro tour golfers look pedestrian on Saturday, Scheffler was one of a handfull of players to not let Augusta National make them look silly.
Hot on the Texas Ex's tail is Collin Morikawa, who has a chance to lift his third major trophy in just his 17th appearance. Morikawa sits alone in second place at 6-under after a 69 in Saturday's third round. The Cal-Berkeley product was one of just two players in the field to break 70 on Saturday alongside Chris Kirk who sits at T13 at 1-over.
Max Homa sits alone in 3rd place at 5-under after another impressive round. Homa has shot 67-71-73 this week and is poised for his first major victory.
Former Texas Tech Red Raider Ludvig Aberg is in fourth place and might be Scheffler's greatest threat on Sunday after rounds of 69 and 70 on Friday and Saturday. The Swede has the rare opportunity to win the Masters in his first attempt.
Shipley and Woods are scheduled to tee off at 9:35 a.m. ET on Sunday morning.
