Ohio State Hoops Target Jasper Johnson Talks Buckeyes Recruitment

Ohio State class of 2025 four-star target Jasper Johnson has built a relationship with former Buckeyes guard and fellow Kentucky native D'Angelo Russell.
In this story:

The Ohio State Buckeyes have their eye on 2025 four-star combo guard Jasper Johnson, and he has his eye on them.

Johnson told On3 that the Buckeyes were one of the places he's visited along with Louisville, Memphis "and a few more." The Lexington, KY. native holds offers from 16 schools, according to On3, but schools he hasn't been offered by that he's heard from are LSU and Arizona.

Johnson said he's "become cool" with former Buckeye guard D'Angelo Russell.

“I went to a football game and also got to watch basketball practice. I liked their facility and coaches," Johnson said of Ohio State. "They are trying to turn things around, and coach said they need guards. Coach (Jack) Owens is a good dude, and we have built a relationship. Plus DLo went there. The atmosphere there was hype. The Skull Session was crazy.”

Johnson is 6-2 and 165 pounds as a consensus top-35 overall and top-five combo guard in the class of 2025. After receiving an offer from the Buckeyes on Oct. 1, 2022, he was in attendance for Ohio State's 62-41 loss to Michigan State on Feb. 12.

He has connections both to the Wildcats and Buckeyes.

In addition to his relationship with Russell, he said his mom's brother, Julius Yeast, played football at Ohio State from 1998-99. His father, Dennis Johnson, and uncle, Derrick Johnson, both played football at Kentucky.

Johnson said he plays at a "smooth pace" and takes "pride in being a good passer." He said he wants to have "a good relationship with the coaching staff" at his next level.

"I want the staff to trust me and coach me to get to my dreams and goals. I’ll play whatever style they need me to," Johnson said. "I like doing both, playing on or off the ball. Most teams have a few guards, so if I play off the ball, I think I can be effective. I play on and off the ball a lot on my travel team.”
