Ohio State Commit ‘20 Kourt Williams (SS) Highlights and Evaluation
If you find yourself in the slot on the receiving end of a bubble-screen with Kourt Williams (6'1-215) lined up across you, you might as well just drop the pass.
Guys that can come up and dismantle bubble screens are becoming increasingly valuable in today's football landscape. Kourt Williams is one of those guys. He sniffs out screens like a dog smells bacon.
Let's take a closer look into Kourt William's game
Strengths
Eye Discipline - You don't get to make tackles if you're not in the correct position, and the only way to position yourself correctly is to stay disciplined with your reads. Kourt's eyes are seldom out of place. He doesn't try to do too much, which can be the difference between giving up 6 yards versus giving up 6 points. He simply does his 1/11th and trusts his teammates to do their jobs too.
Tackling - Flat defenders must be the best tacklers on your team and they need to know how to use the sideline as an extra defender. Kourt has a great sense of where he is on every play - in relation to the boundary as well as the field.
Box Play - His work inside the box was really impressive as well. Kourt's clearly not afraid to bang around with the big boys, (although this may not be the best use of his skill-set at the collegiate level). His film against Mater Dei's offensive line was just plain filthy. That (very big, and well-coached) offensive line was distraught; They could not account for that extra box player, and Kourt ended up wreaking havoc in the backfield.
Reminds me of this old dude...
Ohio State Recruiting Big Picture
From the pros down, the spreading out of offensive personnel is requiring defenders to have exceptional open-field tackling abilities. O-Coordinators are obsessed with "getting the ball to playmakers in space". And we all know as defenders, we have to adjust to their formations and their playing style. If you have anybody on your defense that can't rally down to the flat and consistently shut down the short routes/bubble-screens, any O-Coordinator with anything will find and exploit this weakness.
Ohio State (come 2020) will be one of those schools you just can't pass against. We KNOW they'll have a mean pass rush. We KNOW they'll have DB's picked in the 1st round of the NFL Draft every year. I don't blame Kourt for joining the likes of Clark Phillips (CB), Lathan Ransom (S), and OL Luke Wypler in beautiful Columbus, Ohio.
